A Barrel Race is an event timed to 100th of a second. The run of horse and rider is executed either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction in a cloverleaf pattern. Diagram (not to scale) shows clockwise pattern.
The layout measurements of barrels and timer are scaled to the size of arena, keeping the established minimums.
If a barrel is knocked down, a 5 point penalty is added to the time. The horse & rider with the least time is the winner. A simple game at which it is very difficult to excel.
Key contributing factors to winning are many - horsemanship, communication and cooperation between horse and rider, strategy, balance and speed all play a big part.
